The Tail Section

STOL TAIL DESIGN

Picture
The STOL CH 801-HD tail sections are designed to provide maximum effectiveness (control) at slow speeds and at high angles of attack.

RUDDER:
The aircraft features an all-flying vertical tail (rudder) section for excellent effectiveness and control, especially at low speeds. The all-flying rudder provides responsive rudder control, while also minimizing weight and complexity (there’s only one vertical tail section). Two rudder bearings bolt to the rear fuselage to fix the rudder to the fuselage.

HORIZONTAL TAIL: The horizontal tail sections are made up of the stabilizer and the elevator. Both these sections are unique and developed specifically for maximum effectiveness at low speeds and at high angles of attack. The stabilizer is an inverted airfoil section to maximize downward lift to help achieve the high angles of attack typically required for short take-off and landing performance. The elevator is an actual airfoil section, and provides a ‘virtual venturi’ effect when deflected down. The unique tail sections provide maximum effectiveness for short take-off and landing performance – while also minimizing the actual size of the tail sections. Note: The standard CH 801 Horizontal tail was increased in size in 2004 for even more effectiveness and to help accommodate heavier engines. Since then, the tail width of the CH 801 has been 3070mm (not including the fiberglass tips). Builders see here for details.

NEW VORTEX GENERATORS:
Now available as a performance-enhancing option, Zenair manufactures aluminum VGs that can be installed on the lower surface of the STOL CH 801-HD elevator. VG have been demonstrated to improve slow-speed flying characteristics and can also allow the aircraft to achieve slower stall speeds. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to optimize the STOL characteristics of their aircraft!

The STOL CH 801-HD makes use of highly engineered design features for excellent STOL performance, and importantly, responsive control at low speeds. While many aircraft designs often boast a low stall speed, many of these same designs have minimal control effectiveness at these lower speeds. Not so with the STOL CH 801-HD.
