Based on the success of the STOL CH-801-HD as a commercial spray plane (a.k.a. the CH-8000), Zenair and AMA then began working on a new and larger version of the aircraft: one that would have an increased gross weight and higher useful load. This exciting new design was tested and operated by AMA throughout 2015/16; it is the basis for the aircraft Zenair is now offering as the all-new STOL CH 801-Super-Duty. Conceived for more demanding missions and maximum utility, the new and larger STOL CH 801-SD offers enhanced load-carrying capabilities as well as exceptional slow-flight performances while still using simple, proven design concepts for easy assembly, operation and maintenance. |
The new STOL CH 801-SD design has 4 feet additional wingspan than the lighter "HD" model. That's 2 feet per side, for a total wing area of 189 square feet. This added lifting capability allows the aircraft to carry higher loads, whether passengers or cargo. At lighter loads, the larger wing allows for even more spectacular short take-offs and STOL performances.
An extended stabilizer and elevator give the larger and heavier STOL CH 801-SD all the control it needs for slow flight - and the repetitive and often very demanding (extreme) maneuvers used for effective crop spraying. The "SD" model uses the same All-Flying rudder design found on other Zenair STOL models for superior directional/yaw control and remarkable cross-wind capabilities.
More Useful Load! The 4-seat STOL CH 801-SD offers one of the highest useful loads for any kit aircraft in its category. Originally developed to carry chemicals for crop-spraying, the 1,400 lbs useful load allows for heavier passengers, more baggage or additional equipment. The aircraft can easily be configured or equipped for "specific use" or "special missions".
The stock tricycle gear system used on the STOL CH 801-HD has outstanding shock absorbing capability for rough field operation. The one-piece main gear spring on the "SD" model is even beefier and stronger than on the "HD" model. Made of 7075-T6 aluminum (rather than 6061-T6), the aircraft can handle rough field with its regular wheels, or can also be equipped with large tundra tires for extreme environments... The aircraft's tricycle gear system offers rough field capability while providing all the advantages of a tricycle-gear aircraft, such as easy and precise ground handling and superior over-the-nose visibility.
The STOL CH 801-SD was not just designed for mundane tasks, it was developed by commercial AG pilots who needed a work-horse capable of handling heavy loads and extreme manoeuvres day-in and day-out. The new wings have more ribs, a number of aluminum skins are thicker and the steel-tube cabin frame has also been reinforced. The airframe itself is designed to allow maximum customization by the builder.
The STOL CH 801-SD is designed for a wide range of aircraft engines, up to 260 HP. Because it is not designed ‘around’ a specific engine, customized installations by builders are possible and straight-forward. For economy, builders can choose 180 HP O-360; for best performance, a 240 HP O-540 can be selected instead. The mid-range choice of engine recommended by Zenair is the fuel-injected 215 HP Lycoming IO-390 (or similar).
FUEL SYSTEM: The STOL CH 801-SD is equipped with a pair of 15 US gallon (56 liters) welded aluminum fuel tanks, located inside each wing behind the main wing spar. The Extended Range Option doubles the number of wing tanks to four, for a total fuel capacity of 60 gallons (224 liters).
